Dandelions and Violets

Spring hit early here in Indiana, mainly due to our very mild winter. Cue massive amounts of mosquitoes in 3…2…1….

The past few weeks, I’ve been relishing the burst of flowers and colors on my thrice weekly walk to class. The winter months were obviously not that inspiring, but at least there weren’t too many mornings of frostbite or intense chill.

Then the flowers came.

The first two days that I see dandelions, I don’t care that they are weeds. They are living, green, blooming plants! The desolation of winter is coming to an end! Then, even better – specks of purple shine through. Violets. Quad-petaled happiness.

I noticed something on the lawns that I pass on my walk – the dandelions and violets are interspersed among the grass and each other. It hit me in a weird way a a few weeks ago – both need to be there on the lawns for the raw beauty to come through. The annoyances of bright yellow dandelions paired with the deep purple and delicate violet petals. They somehow need each other.

It seemed as though the ground was trying to make a point to me: life intertwines both “dandelions” and “violets.” There are no strict lines or pattern or method to them. The tough weeds and delicate flowers are scattered in no particular order. They landed and bloomed where God wanted them.

Lives are given both dandelions and violets. You can despise the dandelions and wish for violets only or realize that each enriches the other.

Honestly, I’ve considered extending the metaphor, but you get the point. Enjoy the Spring.

P.S. Did you know that both dandelions and violets are edible? I’m going on a recipe hunt.
