Summer Party

Yesterday, I showed some not so tasty pictures. Sorry.

Vegetarians, beware. The next 3 pictures are not for you. However, omnivores and paleo folk will be happy!

Mmmmm….kabobs….on the grill!

The “Master” griller, er something… That would be KT’s sexy apron that I’m sporting along with a look of sheer exhaustion.

So, my friend KT and I planned a birthday dinner, and I am rather proud of our planning. At least half of those attending were following the Paleo Diet to some extent. Therefore, our menu was based off Paleo-friendly principles. It wasn’t completely Paleo, as there were some oils and chocolate, but even to the strictest adherer of said diet plan, our meal was a success.

The menu:

  • Pickled vegetables (green beans, onions, etc.) for appetizers
  • Kabobs
  • Roasted Vegetables
  • Carrot-Walnut salad
  • Flourless chocolate cake

With the meal planned for Sunday, we worked the night before on everything possible. KT mixed up a marinade for the HUGE sirloin steaks. (Thank you, Maple Valley Farm!). I grated the carrots and ground the walnuts using KT’s food processor. Then we made the cake.

Well, we tried with the cake. It turned out fine in the end, BUT there was a big mishap. I didn’t have access to my stand mixer or hand mixer; KT didn’t have a hand mixer or whisk attachment on her stick mixer.

Flourless chocolate cake requires 6 egg whites beaten to stiff peaks.

By the way, blenders don’t work for beating eggs to stiff peaks. Believe me, I tried ALL the tricks I knew of letting the eggs come to room temp, etc. We just didn’t have the right equipment. How Julia Child ever did this by hand, I will NEVER know.

In the end, KT and I had a great party, and we even got to sit down before our guests arrived.

Sorry, the food was so good and conversation so lively, that I don’t have pictures of the end result. But all in all, KT and I could toast to a successful evening:
