Zum, Zum, Zumba

Yesterday was my first experience with “Zumba.”

When I arrived to class, the room was full of women and the token guy. Based on what little I saw, I think he was there with his girlfriend, but who knows…I didn’t actually talk with him. The music choices were “meh”, and I was not on the same wavelength as the instructor. She tended to have a “do what I do” and “just follow me” approach.  I would have preferred that she have a mic and actually told us the beginning moves of the set. Also, after every 5-10 minutes, we would break for water (good) but it was more so the instructor could switch her music, since it seemed the stereo/iPod wasn’t cued up and ready to go.

Pros: As a form of cardiovascular exercise, it is entertaining and does a decent job of getting up the heart rate. Some of the moves reminded me of my show choir days. Ah, the step touch. The 3-point spin and clap. The modified Charleston. Good memories.

Cons: Then the hip-hop types moves started. I have the hips; I don’t have the moves. If I’m going to step around a dance studio, do kinda-sorta dance moves melded with Tae Bo and step aerobics all the while being the pasty-white girl, I’d like to know what is going on rather than be clueless and look more uncoordinated than I am.

Looking around the Zumba website, I’m wondering if my instructor is actually a Zumba certified instructor or if she’s just really good with dance aerobics and the fitness center stuck “Zumba” to the name so people would come. I’m fairly certain that I both looked and felt like the right frame in the pic below.

Happy fitness, y’all.
